Jason Bell’s collection “An Englishman in New York” celebrates the English expats who have made the Big Apple their home. It features among others Kate Winslet and Sting.
Inspired by some of the 120,000 English men and women living in New York City, Jason Bell has identified and photographed leading British born figures setting the cultural agenda in New York. “I wanted to tell the stories of all the different types of people who live all over this city. Sting gets a pass since he wrote the song.”
“An Englishman in New York: Photographs by Jason Bell” can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery, London, until 17 April 2011. Jason Bell can be heard on BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House, on Sunday 22 August from 0900 BST.
Jason Bell began this project following a commission on ‘Anglophilia’ for American Vogue. He has lived between New York and London since 2003.
