Sports personalities, politicians, actors and musicians all urged football bosses to bring World Cup football to Tyneside. A delegation of FA inspectors was last week in the region running the rule of Newcastle Gatesheads campaign to be a host city for the 2018 or 2022 tournaments. Also Sting did so, stating: “St Jamess Park would make a fantastic World Cup venue and NewcastleGateshead a world-class host city. The pride and passion of the people of the North East, alongside their love of football and Newcastle United, would ensure that the competition is a true celebration of the sport and would bring local, national and international communities and cultures together.”
