The BBC reported how Andy Summers has received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Bournemouth University in early November. Summers, a multi-Grammy and Brit award winner who now lives in California in the United States, used the US presidential election to offer advice to graduates. “You are graduating at a very propitious moment in the world,” he said. “Barack Obama’s election has finally thrown a beautiful ray of light into the world so I think you’re going forth at a great time.” He added: “It’s very special for me to come back to the place where I started and to receive this award.”
Andy Summers spent his teenage years in Bournemouth before achieving huge success as the guitarist in the Police. He told the Daily Echo: Its a very significant award all my early thoughts on a career came from Bournemouth its good to come back. He said: I feel a bit of a fraud because my wife is a real doctor and it took her seven years of study! Its very inspiring so many of these young people see journalism as a valuable profession.
