The Algerian raï singer Cheb Mami, known for his collaboration with Sting on Desert Rose, was jailed yesterday evening in France. His arrest is related, according to the court of Bobigny, to “voluntary violence, locking up of people and threatening them”, and this related to one of his previous partners. The arrest was witnessed on Thursday morning by one of StingUs-representatives in France at the airport of Orly. The fact of which Cheb Mami is accused took place in Morocco and Algeria, and concerned apparently an ex-girlfriend of the singer who was forced to undergo an abortion. His concert of yesterday in Marseille was consequently cancelled. Cheb Mami’s new album is to be released tomorrow in France, entitled “Layali”.
