STING PERFORMING IN UZBEKISTAN: ORDINARY UZBEKS PRICED OUT OF STING CONCERT

On October 17 (or according to some sources 18), 2009 the Tashkent opera house named after Alisher Navoi will host a concert by Sting. Even the cheapest ticket will cost more than 45 times the average monthly salary in Uzbekistan. Chief organizer of the art Week is The Forum of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan, headed by Gulnara Karimova, the elder daughter of the Uzbek President. The weeklong program aims to promote international and Uzbek fashion items, including Karimova’s own range of jewelry designed for Chopard, a Swiss luxury brand. Karimova is currently head of the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the United Nations in Geneva.
Today, after eleven years of dictatorial rule under the iron-fist of President Islam Karimov, it is exactly his daughter Gulnara Karimova and her entourage who are also claimed, among many other less humanistic activities, to stand entirely behind the Uzbek sex industry in the UAE. Furthermore, according to some sources, “Gulnara has given tens of thousands of visas to Uzbek women who for the most part are prostitutes working in hotels, restaurants and other recreational venues, many Uzbek women have been flown to the UAE under false pretenses, only to discover that they will have to work as prostitutes”.

We are surprised that Sting’s entourage is not checking this better. It reminds us of Sting attending parties of and embracing a chartered plane by Saudi financier/arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi in the early eighties.
